QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN SELECTING A CUSTOM HOME BUILDER:

Once you decide to build a custom home, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the exciting decisions, like, which floorplan suits your needs or what cabinet finishes you prefer. However, there’s one key decision to make before all the others: Which builder should you work with?

Selecting the right home builder is a key step in creating the home of your dreams. You should feel comfortable asking a potential home builder every question that you think is important. And, a professional builder or sales representative will want to make you a happy and satisfied home owner. Besides the questions of “How much does it cost?,” and “When can we move in?,” here are some important questions to ask:

  • HOW MUCH CONTROL DO I HAVE?

    • At MCH the client makes almost every decision. You will sit down with an architect and design the exact home you want. The only limit is your personal budget.

  • ARE YOU INSURED?

    • MCH certainly is. We provide general liability insurance and make sure a Builders Risk policy is active on every job.

  • How do you compare yourself to other builders? What benefits do your homes have vs the competition?

    • In our opinion, MCH is a step above all competition (we might be biased though). At MCH you are building a truly custom home. Others modify, we create!

  • Who will oversee the construction of my home?

    • Primarily, your project manager, Jason or Colton. However, here at MCH the entire team takes ownership and pride in every job. Stoney and Hayden are also on site at least once a week, more if necessary, making sure our standard of excellence is upheld.

  • How and when is the cost of my home determined?

    • At MCH we will bid and build you a complete budget for your home once a deposit has been made. We will review and approve that budget together with you. Past that point, your selections generally control how close we are to that budget.

  • How will I be kept informed throughout the building process?

    • Here at MCH we use a service called BuilderTrend. This web and app-based service allows us to upload daily logs, pictures, and relevant documents. You will have access to all relevant aspects of your job whenever you want.

  • How will you, the builder, get paid? Do you make more money if we spend more money?

    • MCH utilizes a flat fee model that is based solely on the area under roof square footage of your home. The client pays the exact cost of construction plus our flat builder’s fee. This fee will not change unless the square footage of your home changes! Therefore, every savings during the selections process is passed directly to you, the client. It is just that simple and transparent!

  • When can I access my home/jobsite?

    • As often as you’d like. We maintain the cleanest job sites and even pour a temporary walkway to your home so it’s easy for you to access your home. We do want to remind you that construction sites are dangerous and it’s always best to have the project manager with you.

  • What is your inspection process?

    • We don’t just meet code, we exceed code. We follow every applicable inspection requirement set forth by the city or county where your home resides.

  • Do you conduct a final walkthrough?

    • We absolutely do! Multiple in fact. First, the MCH leadership team will walk the home. We scrutinize every detail, fixing issues as necessary. Following that, the project manager will walk the home with the client. If everything is to the client’s satisfaction, they sign off and accept the home. If there is a flaw, we fix it.

  • Are your past clients satisfied with their homes?

    • Absolutely. Our clients have been so happy that we mainly build for referrals and repeat clients! Additionally, Living Magazine has voted MCH the best custom home builder in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. 7 years and going strong!

You’ll be working closely with your builder for at least six months, and you want to make sure they are a great fit for you and your project. The excitement of beginning construction on your new home may make you want to rush through this process, but take your time; it’s definitely worth it!
